School trustee candidate Q&A: Michelle Tomashewski

How long have you been living in Thompson?

I was born and raised in Thompson so this has been home [for] 36 years. My parents actually moved from the south. My dad started a career with Inco at the time so that’s how we established here.

What do you do for a living?

I first started out working in child care and children have been basically a part of my life. I have sisters that have been involved with child care. I currently work for Vale and I’m a part of their executive. I do a lot of purchasing so … doing the pros and cons of purchases and budgets.

Why do you want to be on the school board?

I thought about it in the past, just having conversations with family members, discussing stuff even just down south with their issues on school stuff . We’ve dealt with bullying once or twice. It’s been dealt with pretty quick and very effectively. I’ve been here my whole Life and I figured it was a good opportunity to try and get involved. We’re going to be here for the long haul.

What is the most important educational issue you want to address if elected?

You hear about classroom sizes, budgets, big things, doing cuts. We don’t really want to see cuts going through our school system. Education’s a big thing and we want to see the best education for out kids in our community. I think those are a few of the issues.

Why should someone vote for you over the other candidates?

I think we need to see some new faces, new ideas. I hope to do my best to bring those across. If anyone has any concerns I hope they come to me and, if I am elected, I will put them out on the table for them and hopefully get at least a response. I know that we can’t fix everything in one day and hopefully we can get it fixed in a reasonable time.

Anything else you want to add?

I just wish everyone the best of luck and good luck in the campaign
