Thompson Tumbler recognized by provincial gymnastics association

Seven-year-old Andre Smith of the Thompson Tumblers gymnastics club was recognized June 12 as the province's top athlete in the regional stream beginner boys' category at the Manitoba Gymnastics Association awards banquet.

The provincial award caps a successful first season in competitive gymnastics for Smith, who finished first overall in the regional stream beginner boys' category at the 2009 Men's Manitoba Open March 29, capturing gold in the floor, rings, vault and high bar, and compiling a total score of 36.110.

Smith was also first overall at a competition in Gimli, where he was first on the uneven bars and in the floor exercises, second on the vault and fourth in the mushroom in his division.
