Skatepark construction remains at mercy of Mother Nature

Dreams of catching air remain in a holding pattern for Thompson skateboarders as the city's in-progress skatepark is held hostage by Mother Nature.

Dreams of catching air remain in a holding pattern for Thompson skateboarders as the city's in-progress skatepark is held hostage by Mother Nature.

"We have been at the mercy of the weather on this skatepark project all summer and that story isn't changing," said Bruce Krentz, Thompson's director of recreation, parks and culture, the department that is overseeing the project, which got started fundraising in 2007.

Site preparation has already been partially completed by contractor Smook Brothers and city crews hoping to begin concrete work last week.

"If the weather co-operates, they will be done in the next two weeks and a rep from Barkman Concrete will come up to place those large components that are currently on site," said Krentz.

Once that is complete, Smook can return to do the remainder of the earthwork, after which a contractor will pour the finished concrete work between the components, which include ramps, stairs and other objects.

"With good weather and a minimum of snags in construction we feel the project can be completed this fall," said Krentz.
