After three days of intense competition, the peewee Thompson King Miners ended up finishing first and fourth in the 26th annual Prince-Berscheid Memorial Hockey Tournament.

The tournament itself ran Jan. 19–21 at the Thompson Regional Community Centre, and featured teams from all over Northern Manitoba, including Cross Lake, Norway House, The Pas, Flin Flon, Swan River and Tataskweyak (Split Lake).

Even though they settled for fourth place at last year’s competition, the peewee A King Miners dominated their division this past weekend, beating every single team that came their way.

This undefeated streak continued into the gold medal game on Sunday, where the King Miners crushed the Tataskweyak Eagles by a final score of 12–2.

Their counterparts in the AA division did not fare as well and ended up finishing fourth, a couple steps below their gold medal performance at last year’s tournament.

Despite struggling during the round robin portion of the competition, the AA King Miners put up a decent fight during the bronze medal game against The Pas Huskies.

After trading goals back and forth for three periods, the score was tied at 2–2 and things had to be settled in overtime. However, the Huskies got the better of their opponents and managed to secure a bronze medal victory for themselves.

Elsewhere in the tournament, the Swan River Stampeders beat the Flin Flon Bombers 7–6 in the AA division final to let them clinch first place and hoist the Doug’s Source for Sports trophy.

Meanwhile, in the A division bronze medal game, the Norway House North Stars beat The Pas Huskies 5–4 in overtime to bring home the Landers Cup.
