After ending a 25-game losing streak by earning their fist win of the season Dec. 8, the Norman Northstars headed out on the road Dec. 13-15, finishing 2019 with a three-game losing streak to the Yellowhead Chiefs and Brandon Wheat Kings.

Ryan Monias and Albert Sinclair were the Northstars’ only goal-scorers in a 6-2 loss to Yellowhead to start off the trip, but their third period goals came too late to make a difference with the Chiefs leading 5-0. Colby Joseph staked the home team to a 1-0 lead in the first period before Kayden Sutherland, Joseph and Cole Topham quadrupled it in the middle frame. Conor Geekie got Yellowhead’s fifth early in the third period and Briley Wood scored the sixth with just 61 seconds left to play. Odin Church made 43 saves in the loss, which saw the Northstars outshot 49-28.

The Northstars were five goals down within the first 10 minutes of the rematch Dec. 14, as Wood, Joseph, Geekie and Peter Korman, with a pair, put them up 5-0. Korman and Joseph each recorded four goals and Topham a hat trick in an 18-3 rout. Monias, Cheechoo Lathlin and Ian Snooks had the Northstars' goals in the second period, but it was already 8-0 for Yellowhead by the time they got on the board. Linden Gamblin was tagged for the loss after giving up seven goals on 22 shots in 13:19 of play before being replaced by Church, who surrendered 11 goals on 47 shots the rest of the way. Total shots were 69-20 in favour of the Chiefs.

The Northstars’ first lead all weekend came when Dredyn Robinson opened the scoring in the second period against Brandon Dec. 15 but it lasted less than a minute before Dalton Andrew tied it up. Sinclair put the Northstars up again with a power play goal early in the third period, but the next three goals were a single by Deniz Dtelioglou and a pair by Cayden Glover of the Wheat Kings. Monias’s third goal of the weekend pulled the Northstars back within one before Glover finished his hat trick to give Brandon the 5-3 win.

The Northstars start 2020 on the road against the Central Plains Capitals Jan. 3 before playing the Southwest Cougars in Souris Jan. 4-5. Their next home games are Jan. 11-12 in Thompson, when they take on the Winnipeg Wild.
