Flames move into first place in KJHL with lopsided wins over Norway House

The Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) Flames moved into first place in the Keystone Junior Hockey League with a pair of blowout road wins against the Norway House North Stars Jan. 11-12.

The Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) Flames moved into first place in the Keystone Junior Hockey League with a pair of blowout road wins against the Norway House North Stars Jan. 11-12.

Keistin Saunders led the way with four goals in a 15-1 Flames win on Saturday, while Jonathan Saunders added a hat trick. Other scorers included Drew Tait-Reaume with a pair and Trent North, Keith Blacksmith, Jerome Linklater, Henry Muchikekwanape, Albert Berard and James Moore with one goal apiece. 

Tanner Poker had the lone goal for Norway House in the second period, by which point the North Stars were down 9-0.

Kruz Mitchell made 21 saves in the Flames’ net while Elvis Balfour stopped 29 of 44 shots in goal for Norway House.

Muchikekwanape was NCN’s top scorer on Sunday, scoring six times and setting up four goals in a 20-0 shutout. North added a hat trick, while Blacksmith, Keenan Keeper and Jonathan Saunders had two goals apiece. Linklater, Chase Muswagon, Keistin Saunders, Berard and Jason Ouskan had one goal each. Shots were 38-32 for the Flames and Braedin Melsted got the shutout for NCN.

With the wins, the Flames now have 29 points, one more than the second-place Opaskwayak Cree Nation Storm, who have played four more games than NCN has so far this season. The Flames are on the road again Jan. 18-19 to take on the Peguis Juniors, who are third in the league with 15 points.
