Starting in August, the City of Thompson recreation department will return little pieces of sports history to the C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

Darlene Dick, recreation events co-ordinator, says numerous championship banners representing achievements in hockey, ringette and figure skating were taken down around 2011 when the arena was shut down for major renovations and were given to their respective sports organizations for safe keeping.

Recently, these groups have been pushing to return these pieces of memorabilia back to their rightful place.

“We have Northstars banners, we have the old Thompson Hawk championship banners dating back to the 1970s,” said Dick. “We’ll be hanging them from the rafters in the C.A. Nesbitt Arena to show our history of hockey and ice sports.”

As of July 24, the city has collected close to 50 championship banners and Dick said they are always on the lookout for more.

To drop off your own championship banner, please contact Dick via email at [email protected] or over the phone at 204-677-7969.
