Burnside wins ladies open golf tournament

Tanya Burnside was the winner of the 36th-annual ladies open golf tournament played July 4 at the Thompson Golf Club, shooting a 72 in the one-round event to take top spot in the championship flight, beating runner-up Marlene Dram by nine strokes.

Theresa Yetman came third in the flight, recording a 93 and winning on a countback with fourth-place finisher Faye Pilling, who also shot a 93.

The winner of the first flight was Sharon McKay, who shot 101 to finish seven strokes ahead of Cheryl Martinez. Vera-Marie Whitehead was one behind Martinez with a score of 109, while Penny Rutherford finished fourth on a countback with a score of 112.

Bev McLellan was the top finisher in the second flight, shooting 115. She was followed by Brenda Pilon two strokes behind, Sandra Dequier, who shot a 119, and Aggie Galay with a score of 123.

The third flight champion was Diana Gallant, who shot 124, followed by Brenda Davidson at 125, Stacey Benedict at 127 and Tamara Kitzul, who shot 133.

Joyce Mymko was the putting contest winner, while champion Burnside also took the longest drive prize on the second hole and was one of the high hidden hole score winners, along with Nyree Hrabliuk. Burnside was also closest to the pin on the fifth hole. Dequier won the drive the line contest on the sixth hole and Yetman won the prize for coming closest to the pin on the third hole.

No one claimed the prize for an ace on the third hole.
