Bad News Bears battle back, beat Boogaloos

The Bad News Bears beat the Boogaloos 19-18 to win the men's side of the slo-pitch tournament held in Thompson Aug. 29-30, coming from behind after digging themselves a 12-0 hole in the top of the first inning.

The Bad News Bears beat the Boogaloos 19-18 to win the men's side of the slo-pitch tournament held in Thompson Aug. 29-30, coming from behind after digging themselves a 12-0 hole in the top of the first inning.

In the women's draw, Wii Not Fit 2 took the final 19-9 versus Va J.J.'s, who had beaten them 11-6 in the round robin in which Wii Not Fit 2 finished second.

Boogaloos opened the men's final with four straight hits - the first three doubles - and were up 2-0 before the first out was recorded and then tacked on seven runs in a two-out rally to establish their big lead.

The Bad News Bears got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, scoring a pair of runs on a single and an in-the-park homer. Boogaloos got one back in the third to make it 13-2 before the Bears exploded in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs with one out and five more with two men down to go into the fourth inning trailing only by one.

Booglaoos briefly increased their lead in the fourth, scoring a pair of runs, but the Bad News Bears outscored them 7-2 over the last three innings to take the tournament title and the $800 prize.

Booglaoos went home with $600 while Wii Not Fit picked up $400 for finishing third by beating the Ceto Gastins in the bronze medal game.

Wii Not Fit qualified for the semifinal against Boogaloos by beating Sluggers United in the first round of the playoffs, while the Ceto Gastins got past 280 Saskwatch to earn their semifinal matchup with the Bad News Bears.

Boogaloos and Bad News Bears were awarded a bye to the second round of the playoffs after finishing first and second in the round robin.

Tataskwayak Cree Nation finished third in the women's tournament with a victory in the bronze medal game after going winless in the round robin.

Va J.J.'s beat Tataskweyak in the first round of the playoffs, while Wii Not Fit 2 was victorious over the 69ers.

Wii Not Fit 2 earned a $700 cash prize for winning the tournament.
