Thompson Fire & Emergency Services' fire chief has temporarily suspended permits for backyard fire pits due to dry conditions.

Effective immediately, backyard fire pits can not be used at any time, day or night, until the permits are reinstated.

A ban on campfires in provincial parks throughout much of Manitoba and on backcountry travel or travel to remote cottages without a travel permit was put into place by the provincial government July 14 due to high to extreme fire danger.

There are currently 20 out-of-control wildfires burning north of Grand Rapids in the western and northern wildfire regions.

There are 51 fires burning in the northern region alone, including nine that started July 14 from natural causes. Across the province, 116 fires were burning July 14.
