The Salvation Army food bank received a much-needed donation from Thompson’s 100 Women Who Care organization Sept. 23.

“It comes at a good time for us,” said Roy Bladen of the Thompson Salvation Army, with the food bank's busiest season of the year on the horizon, with Thanksgiving and Christmas in the next three months. “The need for our services will escalate for probably October, November and December.”

Picking the food bank as the recipient of their latest donation was a little different than normal, given that the meeting when the decision was to be made had been scheduled for early June, when COVID-19 pandemic precautions restricted large gatherings inside, resulting in its cancellation

“We agreed as a group to donate this to the Salvation Army food bank,” said Cara Butler of 100 Women Who Care. “We know the Salvation Army needs additional support with additional people accessing the food bank.”

Normally, members of 100 Women Who Care gather for quarterly meetings where three potential donation recipients make a pitch about why they should receive the donation and the three choices are voted on.

Formed in 2016, 100 Women Who Care has donated more than $102,000 to various local organizations and aims to grow to include 100 local women or groups who will donate $100 each four times a year. Right now there are about 60 members, some of whom donate money but don’t attend meetings or participate in the votes. For more information about the organization, check out their Facebook group.
