The matter of naming the new arena was on the council agenda again, but councillors still could not agree on a name. They were once more investigating the possibility of naming the facility after a prominent Thompson person.

Blake McGrath, president of United Steelworkers Local 6166, said the main topic at a Jan. 16 union meeting was the need for co-ordinated bargaining with Inco to avoid situations such as the one the previous year when Thompson union members signed a contract while Sudbury workers were out on strike.

Coun. Bill Comaskey raised a concern about the safety of students crossing Thompson Drive in front of R.D. Parker Collegiate, suggesting the speed limit be reduced from 60 km/h to 50 km/h from the library to the Westwood Drive traffic lights.

Council was divided over whether to provide funding for the Norman Regional Development Corporation's 20th anniversary banquet, as some felt the organization already received enough funding from the city.

Major renovations were taking part at the Thompson Plaza as the mall prepared a new space for the Burntwood Community Health Resource Centre, which would take possession of its new location Feb. 29.

North Central Development was trying to organize a meeting in Churchill to explain how an intermodal transportation network could benefit Northern Manitoba.
