Manitoba RCMP is warning drivers to stay off closed winter roads after rescuing three people about 100 kilometres north of Lynn lake.

Police were notified around 11 a.m. on April 10 that three adults were stranded after trying to travel to Tadoule Lake on a winter road that had been closed. The group had left Lynn Lake around 3 a.m. that day and got stuck about four hours later, at which point they used a satellite phone  to contact family.

RCMP chartered a helicopter and searched until it got dark. The travellers told police they had food and fuel and had started a fire so it was determined that they would be safe overnight.

The following morning, the search resumed and the party was located around 9 a.m.

Travelling on closed winter roads is not only unsafe, police say, but people who do so can also be fined and/or charged.
