The smell of gas and an issue with the sewage system caused New Town Square to be evacuated for a few hours Friday.

Workers at New Town Square were evacuated Friday, but were permitted to return to the complex later in the afternoon, after the smell of gas was noticed in the area.

The city had flushed the lines earlier in the week after complaints about an odour, but by Friday, the smell had returned and crept across the street, reaching Subway and Staples.

An issue with the sewage system was blamed for the problem.

"It's all fine on our end," said city public works director Wayne Koversky, who noted that the city had again flushed the lines to ensure that everything was working properly.

Later in the afternoon, the ground floor of New Town Square was reopened, though most businesses opted not to reopen for a short time and instead placed signs in their windows informing customers that they would be open as usual Monday morning. A provincial public health worker was still on site, and it is believed the problem was traced to an issue on the second floor of the plaza.
