Norman Pet Rescue is holding their second annual "Bud, Spud & Steak" fundraiser Sept. 27 at Trappers Tavern at the Mystery Lake Motor Hotel from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. They held a similar inaugural event in the same location Jan. 25.

Jodi Pajic, Thompson district clerk for the Northeast Region of Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship, says there will be "lots of silent auction and 50/50 prizes again."

Norman Pet Rescue says its mission is to:

  • reduce overpopulation of dogs in Manitoba;
  • increase dog adoption and encourage responsible pet guardianship;
  • rehabilitate sick or unsociable dogs;
  • prevent euthanasia of adoptable dogs;
  • advocate for dogs in need and create awareness on the importance of animal rescue.

"We work hand-in-hand with Manitoba communities, local organizations and the general public to improve animal welfare in Manitoba," co-founder Sylvia Green said. "Our focus is on improving the lives of abandoned, neglected and orphaned animals. We believe all animals deserve to experience a life without pain, loneliness or hunger and want them to know what it feels like to be loved and cherished, despite appearance, age or medical condition and match them to their forever homes." Green, and her husband, David, co-founded Norman Pet Rescue last year.

The day-to-day operation of Norman Pet Rescue is out the Green's home, acting as a sort of halfway house or intake program for animals to come through before being adopted.

"We'll take in four or five animals at a time and then they will go out to foster care," Sylvia Green told the Thompson Citizen in January. "We have foster homes around town; people who are willing to open their homes to fostering animals until they're adopted."

Norman Pet Rescue should not be confused with an animal shelter, Green said, as they do not shelter animals, but rather provide a transition for those animals that are in need with a proper home; Green's home does also act as one of the foster homes as well.

"It's not a shelter environment," said Green, "it's a home setting, that would be the main difference; the animals aren't kenneled and they're house-broken sooner."

The issue of animal neglect and cruelty is a huge one in Manitoba says Green, and Norman Pet Rescue says they have been working along with the Thompson Humane Society (THS) to try to curb the problem.

"We share supplies with them (THS)," said Green, "we bring over things like cat treats or newspapers for bedding when we have an over-abundance of those things."

Norman Pet Rescue also allied with Hulls Haven Border Collie Rescue, Manitoba Pug Rescue, Manitoba Pyrenees Rescue, Manitoba Earth Dog Rescue and Funds for Furry Friends to form the Manitoba Association of Rescue Standards (MARS). MARS was created to set a high standard of care for all animals in rescue, Green said.
