Smoke and steam are still rising from the ruins of a house north of Okotoks following a fire Monday night.
The report of a structure fire came in at approximately 8:47 p.m. on Oct. 8 at an acreage off 306 Avenue west of Highway 2A. When fire crews got to the scene, flames had already engulfed the house, said Okotoks Fire Chief Ken Thevenot.
“When we arrived on scene, the flames had already breached through the roof,” said Thevenot. “We tried to go inside, but there was no going in – it had advanced too much throughout the roofline already.
“It was a defensive attack right from the get-go.”
No one was hurt in the blaze, as the residents were at a neighbours. The call was made when a neighbour noticed the flames and called 911.
Alongside Okotoks fire crews were those from Foothills Fire Department out of Heritage Pointe providing mutual aid, as well as tenders (trucks to shuttle water) from Black Diamond and High River, with a total of 16 firefighters containing the blaze.
“It’s unfortunate it happened, but at least everybody came out safe,” said Thevenot.
