Seven confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Churchill, health centre says

Number of Manitobans and northerners hospitalized as a result of the virus has risen since Thursday.

The number of Manitobans hospitalized due to COVID-19 increased by 10 over the previous day Sept. 17, while the number of northerners in hospital as a result of the virus went up by one.

Northern Manitoba reported only four new cases of COVID-19 Sept. 17 but the Churchill Health Centre says there are seven confirmed cases of the virus in the Hudson Bay port town, whose health care services are overseen by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

The number of northerners in hospital rose by one since Thursday, however. There are eight northern residents in hospital overall right now, including three in intensive care.

The number of hospitalizations provincewide jumped sharply since Thursday, from 62 to 72, while the number of patients in intensive care went up by one to 13.

73 per cent of active COVID-19 cases in hospital are in unvaccinated people, while 22 per cent of the patients are partially vaccinated. 86 per cent of active cases in intensive care are unvaccinated while 14 per cent are partially vaccinated. Only five per cent of active hospitalizations are among fully vaccinated patients and no fully vaccinated patients are currently in intensive care.

Manitoba reported 88 new infections on Friday, 53 of them in unvaccinated people. 23 new cases affected fully vaccinated people while 12 of the cases were in partially vaccinated people.

57 per cent of active COVID cases in the province are in unvaccinated people, while 30 per cent affect fully vaccinated people and 14 per cent are in partially vaccinated people.

One new death was added to the provincial total on Friday, bringing it to 1,204 since the pandemic began.

The five-day test positivity rate is 2.6 per cent.
