Thompson skaters shine at the 2018 Skate Canada Manitoba Norman Regional STARSkate Championships

Flin Flon Figure Skating Club hosted the 2018 Skate Canada Norman Regional STARSkate Championships and FUNSkate Jan. 27-28. Skaters from all over the Norman region braved the elements and travelled to participate in the skating events. Skate Thompson skaters dazzled and amazed the judges with their glides, crosscuts, turns, jumps and spins. 

Megan Szabo competed in STARSkate 9 and 10 FreeSkate and Gold Elements. Megan received her personal best scores. Awesome skating Megan! Amy Shier competed in STARSkaate 6 and 9 FreeSkate and Gold Elements. Amy also received her personal best score in STAR 6 FreeSkate. Super skating Amy! Amy and Megan also performed a Showcase 4, which rocked the skating rink. Emily Penney, Megan Wischnewski competed STAR 6 FreeSkate and STAR 7-8 elements. Emily had her personal best skate and Megan dazzled the judges with her final regional competition performance. Emily debuted her Silver Interpretive program “Casting My Magic Spell” and received high scores. Kassia Wolanski McGirr competed STAR 5 O/13 FreeSkate, Elements and Gold Interpretive that received her personal best score. Avery Lagimodiere and Sydney Power, first-time competitors in STAR 5, both had amazing skates! Avery and Sydney also competed in STAR 5 elements. Jenna Shier, Summyr Fudge, Ava White, Bridgette Caddy, Jade Brooks and Kaitlyn Krentz competed STAR 4 FreeSkate and elements. All the girls had great skates. Jenna, Bridgette and Elizabeth performed a Showcase 2 that had a lot of dancing and handholding. Elizabeth Phillips and Charly Boychuk competed STAR 3 FreeSkate and elements. The girls delighted the audience with their performances. Ava Rose, Harper Caldwell and Regan Dunn, first-time competitors in STAR 2 FreeSkate and elements, had super great skates. Ava and Regan also performed Showcase 1. Great pair skating! All skaters competed in STAR 1- 5 Team events and Creative Improv STAR 1-4. These two events are fun for the skaters, They are with their teammates for team events and trying to be creative with a piece of music that the skaters only heard three times for the Creative Improv events.

Skate Thompson was awarded the Norman Club Team Spirit Award. This award is chosen by the officials! It goes to the club who makes up a club cheer and shouts it out at the banquet and the rink, who is the loudest and most consistent through the competition day. Congratulations, girls!

2018 Skate Canada Manitoba Achievement Awards were presented at the banquet Friday night by Betty Anne Wilkinson (Norman Regional Director) and Angela Bakos-Shier (Skate Thompson Test Chair and newly elected Regional Competition Chair). This year’s recipients are: Most Enthusiastic Norman CANSkater Award is Lauryn Osberg Ilnisky, Most Dedicated Norman CANPowerSkate Athlete is Daylin Monais, Norman Regional Director’s Award was awarded to Charly Boychuk, Norman Region Volunteer Award is Erin Krokosz and Norman Competitive Skate Athlete is Megan Szabo. Congratulations to all the winners! Skate Thompson is busy preparing for Manitoba Open FreeSkate competition in Portage la Prairie and Manitoba Winter Games.
