Thompson fire chief and director of fire public safety John Maskerine was recognized for nearly 50 years of service to the community as one of two recipients of the provincial government’s Mary Beth Dolin Meritorious Fire Service Award Oct. 10.
A member of the Thompson fire department since joining as a volunteer firefighter in 1969, Maskerine worked his way up the ranks to become chief and fire and public safety director in 2013. Since his firefighting career began, he has served as vice-president of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 2200 for 12 years, working on improving safety standards and helping to institute the two-in, two-out policy to ensure firefighters are never sent into dangerous situations alone. He has also been a member of several committees within the Manitoba Association of Fire Chiefs (MAFC), including the Manitoba provincial fire protection plan committee, and is part of the provincial critical incident stress management team. He has also advocated for improved equipment and protection, including adequate medical protection for firefighters across Manitoba. Maskerine is involved in the Thompson Firefighters Association and also volunteers for community organizations and events including Nickel Days and WinterFest.
“There’s been a lot of laughs, but also a lot of heartache,” over his years as a firefighter, said Maskerine in a City of Thompson press release. “You can’t laugh without crying here. But you wake up the next day and start over. You can never eliminate the dangers, but you learn them, and how to deal with them.”
Maskerine and this year’s other recipient, retired deputy fire chief Garry Bell of Brandon Fire and Emergency Services, are the 34th and 35th people recognized with the award, named for former teacher, school administrator and MLA Mary Beth Dolin.
“These individuals exemplify the leadership, excellence and outstanding achievements that help make this province as safe as possible,” said Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Blaine Pedersen, who is responsible for the Office of the Fire Commissioner. “The commitment to the protection of their community and their dedication to duty is an inspiration to us all.”
“When you have exceptional leadership, it’s reflected in the team that serves under them,” said Mayor Dennis Fenske. “The City of Thompson continues to offer exceptional training, mentorship and service in Fire and Emergency Services, and John’s dedication is a big part of that.”
