Teen readers with a taste for science fiction can get a free copy of Divergent series author Veronica Roth’s new book Carve the Mark by signing up for the Thompson Public Library’s teen book club by Jan. 21.

A minimum of five and a maximum of 15 participants will receive the book, coming out this month, which tells the story of Akos and Cyra, the first a captive of the Shotet people and the latter the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules them.

“We’re going to come back together on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. and we’re going to get together, have pizza, pop and discuss the book,” said library assistant Amanda Sanders, who will serve as the book club’s facilitator.

If all goes well, the book club could be the start of a series.

“I want to do it every two to three months,” says Sanders. “If I get a good enough amount of participants I’m going to figure out what they want and when they want it so I can cater it to the people who actually showed up. They can point me in the right direction of what they want. If they want more book clubs, we’ll do more book clubs. They can even pick the book.”

Teens are one of the hardest groups to bring into the library, Sanders says, because they’re past the age when their parents take them to the library but haven’t yet reached the point of getting into the habit of visiting a library.

“You go off to university, you have to go to the library and then a lot of adults get back into the habit of going to the library once they’re in university,” says Sanders.

Anyone interested in signing up for the book club can do by contacting Sanders in person, by phone, by messaging her via the library’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, or by sending an email to asanders@thompsonlibrary.com. Those same methods can be used to pass along any programming suggestions for the library as well.
