Alberta doctor warns patients will die if air ambulances change airports

EDMONTON - Some doctors in northern Alberta are making one last plea to keep air ambulance service at Edmonton's City Centre airport.

Operations are to be moved to the Edmonton International Airport on March 15.

Dr. Richard Birkill of the Lac La Biche area says the change means it will take more time to get patients to Edmonton hospitals — and he predicts some people will die.

He wants air ambulances to keep flying into the city centre airport until it's officially closed — and that may not happen for another year.

The Alberta government has said the change in airports will not affect patient care.

Helicopters are to be used to shuttle emergency patients from the international airport to city hospitals.
