QUESTION OF THE WEEK

  • Forest fires are a fact of life in Northern Manitoba, although the number and severity vary year to year. How prepared do you feel you are to evacuate quickly if the need arose under a disaster management plan scenario?
  • Poorly prepared. I’d be running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I know better but I’m complacent

A spike by a player from Otter Nelson River School in Cross Lake gets through a block attempt by members of the R.D. Parker Collegiate varsity boys’ volleyball team on Sept. 21 at RDPC.

R.D. Parker Collegiate’s varsity girls’ volleyball team made it to the finals of their first tournament of the season, a pre-zone tournament in their home gym Sept. 21-22 that let the Trojans see how they stack up against their competition from Zone 11.

The Trojans started well in the final, taking the first set 25-14 from the Hapnot Collegiate Institute Kopper Kweens of Flin Flon, but couldn’t finish the job, dropping the second set 25-15 before going down 15-10 in the third and deciding set.

RDPC made it to the final by beating the Otter Nelson River School (ONR) team from Cross Lake 25-19, 25-17 in their semifinal, while the Kopper Kweens eliminated Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute (MBCI) from The Pas in three sets in the other.

The Trojans had a perfect record in the round robin, beating MBCI 25-22, 25-12 and ONR 25-22, 25-8 while edging Hapnot 25-18, 27-26.

In the boys’ tournament, RDPC’s varsity squad had a tougher time and were eliminated 16-25, 25-22, 7-15 by MBCI in the semifinal round. MBCI then lost 25-15, 25-12 in the final against Hapnot, which had qualified by beating ONR 25-16, 25-17 in the other semifinal.

RDPC was winless in the round robin, losing 11-25, 12-25 to the Hapnot Kopper Kings, 16-25, 21-25 to ONR and 19-25, 15-25 to MBCI.
