Reds win senior baseball league for second year running

Thompson men's senior league baseball wrapped up in August with the Boston Pizza Reds capturing the league title for a second straight season to cap off a summer hat saw the local organization host a successful senior AA men's provincial baseball championship tournament.

"Our league is finished," said organizer Red Sangster. "The Boston Pizza Reds won the league again for the second year under coach/manager Jack Sangster."

The Reds received a bye to the finals for finishing with the best regular season record in the three-team league, while the Bankside Billiards Cubs and the Matechuk Trucking Dropkick Murphys were second and third respectively and had to face each other in a semifinal series for the right to contest the league championship.

The Cubs beat the Murphys twice to win the best-of-three series in the first round of the playoffs. The Reds then beat the Cubs two games out of three in the finals to win the cup.

"We had a great summer and a great tournament," said Red Sangster, thanking the volunteers who helped make the provincial tournament on the first weekend of August a success. "The committee worked very, very hard."

Now the league is looking ahead to next summer, when it hopes to add a fourth team, and further down the line towards more hoped-for expansion.

"We hope when the university [College of the North] gets going we'll have another team from there," Red Sangster says.

In addition to more players, the league is also hopeful of recruiting some other on-field help as well.

"We're also looking for some people to take up umpiring," says Red Sangster. "The league will pay to bring somebody up for a course."

The league pays $40 a game for the umpire behind the plate and $20 for the one in the infield, he says. Anyone who's interested is asked to contact Jack Sangster, Ken Stuart or Steve Matechuk.
