The Thompson RCMP have partnered with the Winnipeg RCMP financial integrity unit for a Sept. 19 presentation on mass marketing fraud.

Cpl. Guylaine Berube and Cpl. Breanne Chanel from the financial integrity unit will hold their presentation at the Burntwood Hotel in the Nickel Room at 7 p.m. There will also be presentations at the Thompson Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.

The presentation is open to the public and is for information purposes, specifically identifying and avoiding financial scams and identity theft.

“They’ll be identifying some of the top scams and showing samples of them,” said RCMP Thompson detachment community relations officer Const. Lisa Wowchuk, “It’s about teaching people how to be aware of these scams and how to not become a victim.”

Anyone can be a victim of fraud, explained Wowchuk, and the presentation will not only teach those who attend how to identify a scam, but what to do in the event that they do fall victim to one and who to contact.

“We want to get people informed about the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website,” said Wowchuk, “they can go on there and look through their black book of all the scams out there.” The federal government’s Competition Bureau operates the centre.

For more information on the presentations, contact Wowchuk at: (204) 677-6090.
