QUESTION OF THE WEEK

  • Forest fires are a fact of life in Northern Manitoba, although the number and severity vary year to year. How prepared do you feel you are to evacuate quickly if the need arose under a disaster management plan scenario?
  • Poorly prepared. I’d be running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I know better but I’m complacent

Thompson's Jayden Bayer, left, and Isaac Babulic, right, seen after winning the B-division gold at the 2011 national bantam lacrosse championships, were on the squad again this year, along with fellow Thompsonite William Lutz.

Three Thompson players represented Manitoba at the national bantam box lacrosse championships in Whitby, Ont. in early August, where Team Manitoba lost to Quebec in the B gold medal match.

Jayden Bayer, Isaac Babulic and William Lutz were members of the squad, which recorded one win in the round-robin portion of the tournament, beating Nova Scotia 6-1. Manitoba defeated the same team by a score of 9-4 to qualify for the B gold medal match, which Quebec won 7-5. Quebec had also beaten Manitoba by a score of 5-3 in the round robin.

Other tournament results for Team Manitoba included a 10-5 defeat to Alberta, a 13-4 loss to British Columbia, a 13-2 setback against Ontario and an 8-5 loss to Iroquois.

Bayer had one goal and 10 penalty minutes for Manitoba, while Lutz was assessed four penalty minutes and Babulic was held off the scoresheet.

Bayer and Babulic have represented the province at nationals before, competing together on the provincial bantam team last year and as members of Manitoba's peewee team in 2010, capturing the B-division gold on both occasions.
