QUESTION OF THE WEEK

  • In much of southern Canada, Victoria Day weekend, known also simply as the May-24 weekend, marks the unofficial early kickoff to summer with provincial parks full of campers. What about here in Northern Manitoba?
  • Same here. We’re off to the cabin with fireworks for Monday night. Summer, here I come

  • Not quite as big a deal in the North. Lakes are still pretty frozen, but we live in hope of summer anyway. Our fingers are crossed

Atlanta archdiocese gets 50 per cent stake in literary rights to 'Gone With the Wind'

ATLANTA - A relative of the late author Margaret Mitchell is giving the Archdiocese of Atlanta a 50 per cent stake in the literary rights to her bestselling novel, "Gone With the Wind."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/OEMWgj) that the gift includes a 50 per cent stake in the trademark to the book and items that belonged to Mitchell.

The bequest was made by Joseph Mitchell, nephew of the late author. Joseph Mitchell, who died in October, was a longtime member of the Cathedral of Christ the King.

Steve Swope, a deacon in the archdiocese who is overseeing the gift, says royalties could be in the "hundreds of thousands" of dollars annually from usage of the book just for productions like ballets and plays.
