Thompson player cashes in at World Series of Poker

Derek Mymko of Thompson stayed alive long enough at the 2012 World Series of Poker main event in Las Vegas, Nevada, which wrapped up July 16, to make it into the money and walk away with $38,453 after finishing 278the overall.

Mymko, 39, hit paydirt when he advanced to the next round on day four of the tournament, getting a queen of diamonds on the turn (the fourth communal card turned up in Texas hold 'em) to win the hand with a pair of queens.

At the start of the tournament, hosted at the Rio Suit Hotel & Casino, there were 6,598 players vying for the title, each of whom paid $10,000 to compete.

Mymko was 24th, winning $526 cash, in a no-limit hold 'em tournament in June 2011, which had a buy-in of $230.
