No medals for Canada on first day of competition at Olympic Games

LONDON - The Canadian Press will move a daily report card on the Canadian team's performance at the Olympic Games in London.

Other than Victoria swimmer Ryan Cochrane in the 400 freestyle, Canada didn't have any other real medal chances on Saturday's opening day of competition. It was a shaky start for the rowers, who are touted to win a medal later this week.

After Day 1, no medals yet.

The good:

_ Captain Christine Sinclair scores a pair of second-half goals to lead the women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over South Africa and a 1-1 record in their pool.

_ The men's beach volleyball team of Josh Binstock and Martin Reader open with a victory over host Britain's Steve Grotowski and John Garcia-Thompson.

— The men's pair rowing team of Victoria's David Calder and Scott Frandsen of Kelowna, B.C., advances to semifinal after first-place finish in their heat.

The bad:

_ Ryan Cochrane wins his heat and prepares to swim in the 400-metre freestyle final, only to learn a disqualification of Olympic and world champion Park Tae-hwan of South Korea for a false start was reversed on appeal. That bumps Cochrane out of the final. No Canadian swimmers reach a final.

_ The men's eights rowing team finish last in their heat and 12 seconds back of winner Germany. Canada drops to the repechage, where they must finish top four to get to the final.

_ The women's basketball team can't hold onto a 10-point lead with six minutes left and lose 58-52 to Russia.

Grade: C

Canada's best chance at a medal Sunday is Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel in synchronized diving. Six-time Olympic medallist Clara Hughes competes in the women's road race in cycling.
