QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Reds now baseball frontrunner

The Boston Pizza Reds are pulling away from the competition in Thompson's senior men's baseball league, having lost only two of the nine games they've played so far.

The Reds are atop the league standings at 7-2, while the Bankside Cubs and the Matechuk Trucking Dropkick Murphys are even at 4-5. After a rough start weather-wise, the cancellations have grown more infrequent, says organizer Red Sangster, but haven't gone away entirely.

"There's been a couple games rained out in the past week," Sangster said July 6.

Molson representative Kelly Salamandyk was on hand July 5 to present the latest player of the week awards following an 11-4 Reds win over the Dropkick Murphys on July 5, in which Murray Ettawacappo was the winning pitcher for the Reds. She presented awards to Jeff English of the Dropkick Murphys and Ken Scott from the Cubs.

With the provincial baseball championships in Thompson less than a month away, Sangster says preparations are going well.

"[Recreation department facilities manager] Jim English is doing a good job with his crew," in preparing the fields, Sangster says. "The dugouts have all been painted."

Organizational meetings for the provincial championships, which take place Aug. 3-5, are being held every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Nickel Room at the Burntwood Hotel and Sangster says anyone who wants to pitch in and help is welcome to show up at that time.
