Norman athletes get MASRC scholarships

Four athletes who are members of Northern Manitoba First Nations were awarded $500 scholarships from the Manitoba Aborginal Sports and Recreation Council (MASRC) on June 26.

Braedan Boschman from Cross Lake, Bruce Muswagon from the Norway House Cree Nation, Chanelle Arthurson from Fox Lake Cree Nation and Morgan Cordell of the Tataskweyak Cree Nation were among 15 athletes in Manitoba who received 2002 North American Indigenous Games Legacy Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded annually to aboriginal athletes in the province who have combined athletic leadership in Manitoba's amatory sports community with academic achievement and other school- and community-related activities.

Arthurson, from Gillam, had two goals and five assists in 16 games fro the Norman Wild of the Manitoba Female Midget AAA Hockey League this past season her last with the club.

Cordell, a Grade 12 student at Thompson's R.D. Parker Collegiate, was third in the province with partner Tevin Wong in the boys' doubles division at the high school badminton provincials in Carman May 4-5. He was also named the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Tri-Star rural high school athlete of the week April 24 played for the RDPC Trojans volleyball team earlier in the school year.
