Miranda Faith Canabie, 25, of Thompson, has been charged with second-degree murder in the June 27 Princeton Drive slaying of 50-yeard-old Glen Martin Ross who died in Thompson General Hospital from his injuries, says Sgt. Line Karpish, senior media relations spokesperson for RCMP "D" Division in Winnipeg. Ross was stabbed, police said, in a press release issued at 2:42 p.m. June 28. Karpish had confirmed a murder occurred at 9:33 a.m. in response to an e-mail query.

RCMP and Thompson Fire and EMS were dispatched to the scene shortly after 11 a.m., Karpish said.

Canabie has been remanded into custody and will be appearing in provincial court July 3.

An autopsy is expected to take place in Winnipeg tomorrow, Karpish said.

The Purdue Avenue at Princeton Drive area in Eastwood, one of the highest density housing areas in Thompson, has seen some prolific examples of gang violence and crime over the last five years, leading to numerous crime scenes sealed off with yellow police tape.

Statistics Canada is expected to release its annual Juristat Crime Severity Index values for police services policing communities over 10,000 in population for 2011 in less than a month. Last year, Thompson topped the Violent Crime Severity Index and finished second in both the Overall Crime Severity Index column and Non-Violent Crime Severity Index column.
