QUESTION OF THE WEEK

  • In much of southern Canada, Victoria Day weekend, known also simply as the May-24 weekend, marks the unofficial early kickoff to summer with provincial parks full of campers. What about here in Northern Manitoba?
  • Same here. We’re off to the cabin with fireworks for Monday night. Summer, here I come

DEERWOOD SWARMING
28-year-old man assaulted after being swarmed by a group of individuals following an attempted robbery in Deerwood area.

RCMP are investigating an assault and attempted robbery that took place in the Deerwood area of Thompson 10 days ago, said Sgt. Line Karpish, senior media relations spokesperson for RCMP "D" Division in Winnipeg.

The attack took place in the Rotary Park area. The Rotary Park area is southwest of Thompson Drive North and Cree Road and the neighbouring streets include Lynx Crescent, Elk Bay, Beaver Crescent, Parkway Crescent and Caribou Road.

On June 19, at about 12:45 a.m. RCMP from the Thompson detachment were dispatched to the Deerwood area in Thompson “in relation to a complaint of assault,” Karpish said.

RCMP were advised by the victim, a 28-year-old male from Thompson, that he had been assaulted “after being swarmed by a group of individuals following an attempted robbery,” Karpish said.

The investigation into the circumstances continues.  No arrests have been made as of yet,” added Karpish.

There have been unconfirmed non-police reports that a baseball bat was used as a weapon and the victim’s pants were pulled down around his ankles to dissuade him from trying to run or protect his girlfriend.

The victim was treated at Thompson General Hospital for “non-life threatening injuries sustained during the assault.”

“The RCMP would like to assure the public that there have been no reported incidents with similar circumstances,” Karpish said.
