Federal cuts hurting Manitoba

Story:

Manitoba and Manitobans have been hard hit by federal cuts.

Even before the budget the Conservatives had rammed through legislation gutting the Canadian Wheat Board. This puts hundreds of Manitoba jobs at risk, including here in the North at the Port of Churchill.

Now we are seeing cuts arising out of the federal budget on an almost daily basis that are having a direct effect on Manitoba.

Cuts to Employment Insurance (EI) for seasonal workers will have an impact on Northern Manitoba.

The government has made major cuts to science, including cuts to the Experimental Lakes Area research program. There is no other place in the world that does this work.

They have cut programs for agriculture including the Community Pastures program.

At the same time there is continuing underfunding of Northern and aboriginal health, education, housing and infrastructure that has a major impact on Manitoba.

Meanwhile the Conservative Members of Parliament from Manitoba haven't said anything about these cuts.

I will continue to work with my caucus colleagues to speak out on behalf of our region.

We need this government to stand up for Manitoba and reverse these unfair cuts.
