Nikiks compete at provincials

The Otter Nelson River School Nikiks from Cross Lake competed in two provincial high school athletics championships in June, with a boys' team travelling to Stonewall for the high school baseball championships and a girls' squad competing in the fastpitch provincials in Landmark.

The Nikiks' bats were silent in their opening game of the baseball championships on May 31, a 16-0 loss to the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School Clippers. Cody Spence had a double for Otter Nelson River and Herman McKay had a stolen base. Spence and Joshua Mallet were both caught stealing. Brady Keeper was the pitcher of record in the loss.

The boys jumped on the W.C. Miller Collegiate Aces in the opening inning of their second game the following day, scoring six times before their opponents made it to the plate. Unfortunately for the Nikiks, their lead was cut to one by the end of the first inning and the Aces scored five more in both the second and third innings on their way to a 17-6 victory.

Carlton Richard, Spence and Dylan Blacksmith had doubles for Otter Nelson River, while Anthony Keeper had a triple and a stolen base. Mallet had three stolen bases, Blacksmith two and Rosaire McKay one, while Richard, Mallet and Blacksmith each recorded an RBI. Richard took the loss as the pitcher.

The Nikiks girls finished third in their pool in the round robin at the fastpitch championships, losing 18-0 to the Westwood Collegiate Warriors from Winnipeg in their first game June 1 and then dropping a 16-0 decision to the Portage Collegiate Saints from Portage la Prairie later that day.
