QUESTION OF THE WEEK

  • Forest fires are a fact of life in Northern Manitoba, although the number and severity vary year to year. How prepared do you feel you are to evacuate quickly if the need arose under a disaster management plan scenario?
  • Poorly prepared. I’d be running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I know better but I’m complacent

TORONTO - The union representing employees at four contractors who service Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX:RCI.B) customers across Ontario says workers have voted for a strike mandate.

The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada says some 600 employees who supply telephone and television service and installation for Rogers could strike on June 15.

The union says the move by the workers comes after more than a year spent trying to negotiate a collective agreement.

The union says one of the key issues is that employees are paid on a piece-work system, which creates financial instability.

It adds that other unresolved issues surround seniority and layoff and recall procedures.

The union says it will negotiate right up until the strike deadline and make every attempt to reach a settlement.

The contractors involved are Intek Communications Inc., Wirecomm Systems Inc., SC360 Markham Inc. and Dependable Home Tech Scarborough.
