QUESTION OF THE WEEK

  • In much of southern Canada, Victoria Day weekend, known also simply as the May-24 weekend, marks the unofficial early kickoff to summer with provincial parks full of campers. What about here in Northern Manitoba?
  • Same here. We’re off to the cabin with fireworks for Monday night. Summer, here I come

  • Not quite as big a deal in the North. Lakes are still pretty frozen, but we live in hope of summer anyway. Our fingers are crossed

Thompson Tumblers compete at gymnastics provincials

From March 28-April 1, the Thompson Tumblers went to regional provincials in Beausejour. The girls worked very hard this year. I am very proud of their efforts and results.

Charissa Beardy had her personal best beam routine and vault. She was rewarded with a third-place podium finish for beam and fourth on vault in these events. She works independently in the gym a lot of the time and is very self-motivated. She is an excellent role model for our gymnasts and excels in this sport.

Paige Johnson had a great competition as well. The beam and bar were a little slippery, but her performance on floor and vault demonstrated how powerful and dynamic she is as a gymnast. She brought home a bronze medal on both. She has a great attitude and is a pleasure to coach.

Taylor Lundrigan got so close to the podium on vault with a fourth-place finish and sixth on bars, beam and floor. She went up and was recognized as one of the top all-around gymnasts (11th in the province at that age and category). She is petite, but she is tough and always working on task. Well deserved, great finish.

Jaylene Oniske's highlight was her silver finish on beam. She showed off her straight legs, pointed toes and natural flexibility amongst the fact that she does not seem to know how to fall off, and seems to defy gravity. She is extremely talented and a great competitor.

My favourite event of Talyah Harrison's that day was floor. With her personality and a great sense of where she is in her performance, she placed fourth. She has a lot of talent and is very motivated. She is a great teammate to the other gymnasts.

The beginner gymnasts compete against themselves as this is a learn-to-compete category. They all finished silver all-around. The vault judge noted they had the best vaults in the competition. Great job, ladies.

I would love to thank the competitive coaches for all the hours spent at the gym investing in the competitive program, the Thompson Tumbler club and in the lives of these gymnasts. So a great big thanks to the team, Dawn Lundrigan, Eloria Toporowsky and Hailey Lychuk.
