Churchill student named high school athlete of the week

Alex Berg

Basketball player Alex Berg of the Duke of Marlborough Storm in Churchill was announced as the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association's Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week on April 17.

Berg, a 5’8” post player, helped lead her team to the school’s first ever Zone 11 basketball championship qualifying them for the provincial A high school basketball championships. She started in every game at zones, helping the Storm go undefeated throughout the championship.   At the provincial championships, Berg was selected as player of the game in the Storm's match against Pinawa.

“It was exciting to see the transformation Alex has made from a true volleyball player to basketball," said coach Tim Brock in the MHSAA news release. "Her dedication and commitment to the sport is astonishing. She is a quiet leader on the court, and leads by example.  She is an absolute joy to coach and I couldn’t have been prouder of her hard work”.

A Grade 12 student, Berg maintains an average of 86 per cent, while also competing in track and field, volleyball and badminton.
