QUESTION OF THE WEEK

  • Forest fires are a fact of life in Northern Manitoba, although the number and severity vary year to year. How prepared do you feel you are to evacuate quickly if the need arose under a disaster management plan scenario?
  • Poorly prepared. I’d be running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I know better but I’m complacent

11-year-old Saskatchewan drummer earns country music award nomination

MELFORT, Sask. - At an age when a lot of young boys are busy playing video games or skateboarding, Rene Constant is getting ready to hit the red carpet.

The 11-year-old has just received a nomination for a Saskatchewan Country Music Association award in the All-Star Band (drums) category.

Rene is the drummer for Constant Reminder, a band composed of himself and his two older brothers, Seth and Cole, who all reside on the James Smith Reserve.

His brothers originally created the band and when Rene was eight he picked up his first set of sticks to complete the trio.

Their mother, Karen, says the nomination has been a great thing for the family.

Rene is a self-taught musician who has developed his own technique through listening to his favourite drummer, Ringo Starr, and watching his uncle play.

“Rene would watch him play the drums, like he would sit there for hours just watching him, so he finally got into wanting to play,” says Karen.

“I’m really proud of him."

She says all her boys practice for hours every day, though she says the house rule is they have to do their homework first.
