Water meter installation wreaks havoc on insulation

To the Editor:

Did you know the most popular question around town is "Did you get your water meter installed yet?" and the most popular answers are: "Yes, and what a mess they left behind," or "No, not yet, they were suppose to be here on such-and-such a date but they did not show up yet," and then those people would phone to find out why they did not show up yet, to learn that the installers have been there and gone with the job done and a mess left behind.

Some of the complaints I have heard were: they had to drill a hole in my basement and now my wall is leaking, they took all my insulation away from the pipes and never replaced it, etc. My complaint is that they cut the insulation from my pipes and did not take the time to place it back on properly in order for my water not to freeze this winter. However, I saw that and was worried so I took more insulation and stuffed it around the meter where the pipes were showing only because if my water freezes I am the one who will suffer, not the city council.

My advice to everyone who lives in mobile homes is to go check out their pipes or a lot of people are going to be without water for a long time when the winter comes. My question is why are these people getting away with doing such a poor job? Let’s think about our elders who may not be able to check out under their homes to ensure the job is not left in a mess ... who is going to come to their rescue when their water freezes?
