Via Rail trains are currently not running between Thompson and The Pas in either direction along the Winnipeg-Churchill line. This is due to a freight derailment in Northern Manitoba, which has affected northbound Train 693 and southbound Train 692 since July 24. It is expected that the lines will be cleared on July 27, at which point normal service will resume. In a July 24 release, Via noted that the disruption "is beyond Via's control."

According to Mike Ogborn, manager of governmental and public affairs for OmniTRAX Canada, a subsidiary of Denver-based OmniTRAX, which owns the Hudson Bay Railway track between The Pas and Thompson, the derailment occurred eight miles north of The Pas. Eleven grain cars, part of a much bigger train, went off the rails. Ogborn expects the line to be open again for Via and other traffic by Tuesday night.
