MLA Report

Manitoba economy has a strategic advantage

Manitoba's economy has shown encouraging signs in recent months.

We had the lowest unemployment rate in Canada last month as employment grew in Manitoba.

We have had significant growth in population. In fact this past year our population grew by the largest amount since the early 1970s.

What is also clear is the fact that Manitoba is increasingly being positioned strategically for growing national and international significance.

There are a number of elements that have always been key to Manitoba's economy.

We have traditionally had a diversified economy. We have also had a young, diversified workforce.

Transportation has also been key. In fact much of our development has centred around our strategic geographic location.

All of these elements are again combining to give Manitoba a huge economic advantage

We are seeing significant development potential in everything from biotechnology to new mines.

We are seeing historic investments in training and post secondary education.

We are seeing historic investments in transportation and infrastructure.

We are also seeing Manitoba increasingly able to take advantage of rapidly changing global economic trends.

We are already well positioned both geographically and economically within North America. At the same time we are already positioning our self to take advantage of trade with the emerging global economic super powers.

These growing economic powers have been described as the BRIC countries. Brazil, Russia, India and China are all growing in importance internationally.

One of the key ways we are positioning ourselves is in terms of transportation. We are developing Centre Port, Canada's leading inland port. It will combine all modes of transportation right in the heart of North America.

We are building on the strength of our seaport, Churchill and developing the Arctic bridge with Russia and other Northern countries.

The key is to combine active public investment and promotion with equally significant private investment. Perhaps not coincidentally this is exactly what the BRIC countries are doing as well.

I believe that Manitoba is increasingly being seen as having some of the greatest potential for economic growth and development in Canada.

Encouraging economic developments today. Tremendous strategic potential for the future. People are increasingly seeing what Manitoba has to offer.
