Mobile sign vendor points out city permit fee cost increased 600 per cent, not the actual rental cost of her signs

To the Editor:

Just a quick response regarding the front page story of last week’s paper.  At first glance, I was pleased to see that the public was being informed about this issue.  But then I realized, to those who don’t already know the issues about the mobile sign bylaw and the recent changes to it, the title of the article is very misleading.  Mobile sign costs have not increased 600 per cent.  Only the fee that the city charges for the permit has.  The actual cost of renting a mobile sign has not increased in at least six years.

My current sign customers are not going to complain.  They all know that it is only the city fee that has increased.  What might happen is that people who have never rented a sign are going to see that headline and think “Now for sure I can not afford to rent a sign for my spouse’s birthday, anniversary, retirement etc.”  What the title of the article should have said was “Mobile sign permits have increased….”
