Asham rink headed to mixed provincials

Farrol Asham's rink from the Burntwood Curling Club beat the fellow Thompson team skipped by Rae Hainstock to win a spot in provincials at the Meyer Norris Penny mixed Zone 1 playdown March 6-7 in The Pas.

Asham's team, which includes third Jennifer Rolles, second Glen Ringrose and lead Kristen McLellan, beat Hainstock's rink 7-6 in the B event March 7 to claim the berth. Earlier, the same two teams met in the A event, with Asham's team coming out on top by a score of 7-4.

The playdown winners were undefeated in the tournament, starting with the win over Hainstock and then beating Jason Dunham's rink 8-1 before beating Kelly Peterson's Snow Lake rink 9-3 in the fourth draw.

Hainstock opened with a 10-4 win over Wayne Finnerty, then recorded victories of 7-0 over Sam Antila's Burntwood Curling Club rink on March 6 and 9-5 over Dunham's rink later that day.

Antila's team was defeated 8-4 by Dunham's rink in the first draw.
