Youth on Bunibonibee Cree Nation in Oxford House have been taking parting school workshops that focus on bullying prevention and building healthy self-esteem.
The program, which featured a school assembly, involved interactive dramas and film clips which allowed the students to take part in presentations on making good choices, dealing with bullying and self-esteem building. During the presentation students were encouraged to think for themselves and make choices for positive behaviour.
Co-ordinator of the program Norma Grieves-Ray says low self-esteem is a contributing problem many First Nation youth deal with which can lead them down a negative path.
“Many of the leaders [in our community] were behind this initiative to spark new hope and direction for our youth,” she says. “We appreciate the support of Manitoba Hydro to make this event possible.”
The main message of the presentation was “you’ve got what it takes to make it”, with students being encouraged to set future goals for themselves.
