Mathew Backhouse of Thompson was named to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's rookie all-star team Feb. 17.
Backhouse, a defenceman with the MJHL's top team, the Dauphin Kings, had one goal and 23 assists in 62 games this season, while only picking up 28 minutes in penalties.
He also skated in the MJHL's prospects game during the league's all-star weekend in January.
Before joining the Kings, Backhouse was the co-captain of the Norman Northstars in 2008-2009 and won the team's People's Jewellers award for commitment to the Northstars program on and off the ice.
All-star selections are determined by a vote of the 11 MJHL head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
