Over the last several weeks, I have visited throughout the Churchill riding. It is now the time to take some clear messages to Parliament on behalf of Northern Manitoba when the House of Commons resumes sitting next week.
One message is clear. There is a continuing sense throughout the riding that the federal government needs to do more to address Northern issues. I heard this in urban and remote communities in all parts of the riding.
I heard concerns about the cost of living and transportation. I heard people talking about the need for the federal government to join with the province to improve our roads and airports
Many people talked about education. It is clear there needs to be more funding including building new schools in some communities. There also needs to be more support for post secondary education, including lifting the current funding cap.
Housing continues to be a major issue in many communities. So too does the need for economic development. It was encouraging to see many innovative local initiatives. In Berens River for example, the community is building log houses for and by community members.
Youth recreation continues to be a major concern. People throughout the North have called for more support for youth in what is one of the youngest regions in Canada.
A lot of concern was expressed about the potential elimination of the Aboriginal Healing Foundation (AHF). I spoke to many people who are working for and with AHF programs and saw firsthand the excellent work that is being done.
In my visits, I also had the opportunity to visit many people and attend many community events. A highlight was joining Rick Mercer at the Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival in The Pas. Congratulations to everyone that made this happen and stay tuned when the show is aired March 2.
Next week I am to Ottawa for the new session of Parliament. My top priority will be to speak out on our concerns and make sure we get the attention we deserve.
