One person confirmed dead

One person has been found dead in a house after a fire on Airport Road Feb. 15 in Split Lake on the Tataskweyak Cree Nation.

RCMP Thompson rural detachment and the Split Lake Fire Department were dispatched to the residential fire on Airport Road shortly before 8 a.m., said Sgt. Line Karpish, an RCMP media spokesperson based in Winnipeg.

"One person has been located deceased in the house,” Karpish said, adding RCMP and “the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner continue to investigate."

The cause of the fire is not known," Karpish said. Damage estimates are not available but the house has extensive damage.

The identity of the victim will not be confirmed until an autopsy has been completed, she said. Split Lake residents have identified the victim as 17-year-old Ashley Grieves.
