Reel North’s Saturday night double feature back Feb. 13 with Empties and (500) Days of Summer

Reel North, in partnership with the Thompson Public Library, is back in the Basement Bijou Room of the Thompson Public Library Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. with the Czech double feature Empties and (500) Days of Summer. Tickets are $5 per person and the doors for the Basement Bijou Room open at 6:30 p.m.

In Empties, which was released three years ago in March 2007 and has English subtitles, Josef Tkaloun is a teacher at a high school in Prague who cannot control his anger when his pupils misbehave in his poetry class.

He quits his job and despite his wife urging him to retire, becomes a cycle courier. After an accident, he still refuses to stay at home and takes a job in the local Žižkov supermarket. He works behind a counter, taking the used glass beer bottles and empty plastic water bottles, giving a receipt to the customers, which they can redeem at the cashier.

Lo and behold he starts matchmaking for customer and staff and resolves to re-ignite the passion in his marriage by celebrating his wedding anniversary with a hot air balloon ride.

In (500) Days of Summer, released last year, Tom, a would-be architect turned sappy greeting card writer, encounters Summer, his boss's new secretary, right off the plane from Michigan. Tom believes in the notion of transforming, cosmically destined love. Summer not so much: actually not at all.
