One person dies in cabin fire north of Nelson House

One person has died after a house fire at a hunter’s cabin two kilometres north of Nelson House burned to the ground.

Around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 29, Thompson rural RCMP received a report of a house fire at the cabin. Thompson RCMP and Nelson House RCMP attended the fire, as well as the Nelson House First Nation Fire Department. The residence was engulfed in flames and completely destroyed.

After further investigation a body was discovered inside the burned remnants of the residence. The identity of the individual is not being released at this time pending positive identity of the victim through dental records and notification of next of kin. An autopsy has been ordered but a date has not yet been determined.

Thompson rural RCMP, the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner and the Thompson Forensic Identification Section are continuing to investigate what caused the fire.
