Reel North, in partnership with the Thompson Public Library, is expanding its horizons and offering their first documentary night Nov. 24 when they screen Food, Inc. Tickets are $5 per person and the doors for the Basement Bijou Room open at 6:30 p.m. The film is at 7 p.m. There will be a discussion after the film.

The 94-minute documentary about the U.S. food industry has been nominated in the category of distinguished documentary achievement for an International Documentary Association award. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles Dec. 4.

Food Inc. is up against Afghan Star, a film about four people competing in a television talent show in Afghanistan, Anvil! The Story of Anvil, the story of a pair of faded rockers hoping for one last grasp at stardom, Diary of a Times Square Thief, which tells of a search for the writer of a diary that was sold on eBay, and Mugabe and the White African, the story of a white African farmer who defies the government of Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe

The International Documentary Association, or IDA, is a Los Angeles-based group that promotes non-fiction filmmaking.

Saturday night movie double features, which made their debut on March 8, 2008, and run from December through May once a month, return Dec. 5 with the 150-minute French film Un conte de Noël, titled A Christmas Tale in English with English subtitles. Arnaud Desplechin's Un conte de Noël tells the story of the Vuillards who come together for Christmas after learning that family matriarch Junon (played by Catherine Deneuve) is dying of cancer and needs a dangerous bone marrow transplant that will only possibly extend her life. A Christmas Tale is followed by Toronto filmmaker Randall Cole’s 90-minute Real Time, shot in the same real time vein as Nick of Time, Phone Booth and 88 Minutes. In Real Time, Andy, a hapless young gambler, gets to spend an interesting afternoon with the heavy who has been hired to whack him.
